Soldier’s Best Friend, founded in Peoria in 2011, helps U.S. military veterans with PTSD or traumatic brain injuries by pairing them with service or therapeutic companion dogs.

Most of the dogs in the program are rescued from local shelters, so it is win-win for everyone involved.

The organization does not charge for the service and offers training in Phoenix, Tucson, Prescott, Flagstaff, Yuma, Show Low, Kingman, and Sierra Vista.

During the training program, Soldier’s Best Friend also pays for the animals’ spaying, neutering, vaccinations and preventative medications.

After the training is complete, ownership of the dog is transferred to the veteran, who will then be responsible for costs and care. But Soldier’s Best Friend said reduced veterinary fees are offered through several hospitals in the state.
