TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The Green Valley man who admitted to attacking a grocery store employee over a sandwich was sentenced on Tuesday, May 26.

Daniel Kovarik Jr. was given probation for five years for the incident at the Sprouts in Green Valley on May 21, 2025. The 43-year-old Kovarik was ordered to have no contact with the victim, was banned from the store forever, ordered to pay restitution to the victim, do 50 hours of community service, and undergo a mental health evaluation and treatment.
The Sahuarita Police Department said Kovarik went to the store and asked a worker to make him a sandwich. When the 70-year-old worker said she could not make it, he allegedly attacked her with a club.
The victim suffered serious injuries that included lacerations on her arm, bruised ribs, and a broken finger, according to the SPD.

On April 22, 2026, Kovarik pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was originally facing several counts of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, and threats and intimidation.
He also pleaded to two counts of criminal damage for separate incidents in 2025. For those pleas, he was sentenced to probation for three years to be served consecutively to the assault case.
