The school told 13 News that the first-year student housing development will be a nine-story building. It was originally planned as a 19-story building.
The U of A announced the project in February, when the Arizona Board of Regents approved the plans. The video above is from that announcement and will be replaced later tonight.
The school said it will still house 1,300 students and still have a dining hall, despite the height change.
The project, which should be open in the fall of 2028, won’t cost the University of Arizona anything upfront. Collegiate Housing Foundation, a non-profit, is footing the bill and will recoup its money over the next 50 years through the fees paid by students.
“The project supports the university’s first-year residency expectation and provides students with an experience that contributes to academic success, engagement and belonging,” a university spokesman told 13 News on Tuesday, June 2.
The school said students who live on campus for at least one year have a graduation rate 50% higher than those who don’t.

“We are committed to doing everything we can to promote student success,” University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella said in February. “The benefits to undergraduate students of living on campus as a component of their learning experience are clear from our own experience.”
While the U of A said there is enough housing at this time, it needs to update older buildings.
According to Real Estate Daily, the dorm is being built at the site of the old Palm Shadows Apartments, which were located at 1815 East Speedway. Real Estate Daily said the old apartment complex has already been demolished, and the 2.49-acre property has been cleared.
