PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix police are asking for public input on their new canine policy.

The department wants feedback on procedures for recordkeeping, handler selection and canine retirements. The policy also covers standards for canine care, equipment and home and work environments.

Officials are seeking input on guidelines for training, deployment and documentation pertaining to department use of canines, as well as direction for canines critically hurt in the line of duty.
Once finalized, the policy will guide officers assigned to work with canines across the department.

The department opened a 45-day public comment period back in April and it ends Sunday.
All comments will be reviewed and considered before the policy is finalized.
