“Remembrance is not loud. It is quiet, steady and enduring,” said Col. Michael J. Childs, the garrison commander at Fort Huachuca, during the installation’s Memorial Day ceremony.

For Childs, Memorial Day is a deliberate pause from everyday life — a chance to refocus on sacrifice.

“The days where the busyness of our lives can start to take over, moments like these and places like these and hallowed ground really help set aside that moment,” he said.

This year, volunteers and service members placed flags and crosses at more than 4,500 gravestones across the Post Cemetery. The markers represent generations of service — from the Revolutionary War through today — and serve as a visible reminder of lives lost in defense of the country.

Childs said ceremonies like this are personal.

“I remember those comrades of mine that we’ve left behind,” he said. “In those moments is when I have given my undivided attention to them and their stories.”

Among those honored is Chris Moon, a U.S. Army sniper who was shot and killed in Afghanistan in 2010. He was 20 years old.

For his family, Memorial Day is not a once-a-year observance.

“I want his memory to live on,” said Marsha Moon, a Gold Star family member. “For us, Memorial Day is every day, you know? We don’t get that back.”

The Moons say they hope those who haven’t experienced a personal loss still take a moment to reflect — not with celebration, but with gratitude and intention.

“Pick up your drink and say to all our fallen… ‘we remember you today,’” Marsha Moon said. “It’s not a happy Memorial Day.”

The ceremony concluded with a 21-gun salute, underscoring the solemn message shared throughout the morning: to remember — quietly, fully, and with purpose.
