Chase ends in crash involving Mesa PD on Loop 202 in central Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A pursuit ended in a multi-vehicle crash, shutting down part of a major central Phoenix freeway during rush hour traffic on Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson with Mesa police says just after 2 p.m., authorities received reports of a man inside a car slumped over his steering wheel off the US 60 and Dobson Road. However, the driver left the area before the police arrived.

Not long after, police tracked the driver to the area of Dobson Road and University Drive. When officers attempted to pull over the driver, he sped off and continued driving recklessly, according to police.

Police began to chase the driver as he went onto the Loop 202 Red Mountain. However, the pursuit ended with the suspect, a Mesa patrol vehicle and several other vehicles crashing near the 24th Street exit in central Phoenix. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

One officer and the suspect were both hospitalized with minor injuries. Police say none of the innocent drivers were seriously hurt.

Arizona’s Family news chopper saw a Mesa patrol vehicle with its grappler deployed on a white sedan. Numerous emergency vehicles were blocking the freeway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says the westbound lanes of the Loop 202 Red Mountain have since reopened.
