Around 6 a.m., Phoenix police officers responded to a medical call involving a pregnant woman at a Motel 6 in the area of 24th Drive and Thomas Road, just east of Interstate 17. Phoenix firefighters discovered the woman was injured from a gunshot wound, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Police said the mother was pronounced dead at the hospital, but doctors and medical staff worked to deliver the baby. The infant is currently in stable condition at the hospital.
Family identified the woman as 36-year-old Starvannah Abraham. Family members tell Arizona’s Family that Abraham was eight months pregnant with her seventh child and was staying at the motel temporarily while she was working to get her own apartment. She was working at Zipps Sports Grill in Scottsdale.

Out of caution, homicide detectives canvassed the scene. Police believe her injuries were self-inflicted, but the medical examiner’s office will determine Abraham’s cause of death.
