On May 8, CBP agriculture specialists found Polyamia arachnion Kramer in a shipment of leafy greens at the Area Port of Nogales. It is only the second time the pest has been seen in America in the last 69 years. In both cases, the pests came from central Mexico.
A similar thing happened in October 2025, when agriculture specialists discovered an Osbornellus salsus at the Port of San Luis for the first time.
Both pests are leafhoppers, which can decimate local farms as they are an invasive species with a voracious appetite. Both can also carry diseases that can wipe out entire crops.

“CBP agriculture specialists work diligently to prevent potentially harmful insects and diseases from entering the United States through our ports of entry,” the CBP said in a release.
