Nicholas Cordova’s family and widow, Alysha Cordova, visited the cemetery on the anniversary of his death to remember him and remind people that his murder case is still open.

“Just instead of like celebrating, we’re just going to honor and remember him,” Alysha Cordova said.

She said the grief hasn’t faded. If anything, she said this year feels heavier.

“Maybe because I’ve been fighting so hard this year for justice for my husband,” she said. “This year just feels extremely heavy and I’m just really frustrated and angry and just over having to fight for something that we should have had from day one.”

The shooting

On May 27, 2020, two gunmen walked into Gilbert Air near Cooper and Guadalupe roads. Nick was on FaceTime with his children when he was shot and killed inside the business he co-owned.

“And my kids still, even though they were so young, they remember and they are traumatized,” Alysha Cordova said.

Gilbert police have never made any arrests.

“They know what’s going on. They have answers and there’s nothing that’s being done,” she said.

Civil allegations

Civil court filings have accused Nicholas Cordova’s business partner, David Sweetman, of orchestrating the murder for money, naming him as a “person of interest” — allegations Sweetman has repeatedly denied.

“He not only told me, but multiple friends jokingly, but seriously, that if anything happened to him, that Dave took him out for life insurance money,” she remembered.

A spokesperson with Gilbert police said detectives are making sure the investigation is thorough enough to bring meaningful accountability.

Social media attention

Alysha Cordova has spent hours posting about Nick Cordova’s case online and years doing what she says feels like detective work herself.

“I have been doing nothing but looking through police reports,” she said. “I’ve hired a lawyer, have talked to PIs, doing all of these different things.”

Renewed attention from social media has brought new eyes to the case. For the first time in years, Alysha Cordova said it feels like people are finally listening.

“I wouldn’t say it feels good, but it’s like I’m finally feeling like everything that I’ve been doing is going to be worth it,” she said.

Alysha Cordova said someone knows exactly who pulled the trigger and why.

Gilbert police said they are committed to pursuing every lead and piece of evidence in the case.

“Our responsibility is to ensure any charges brought forward are supported by facts, evidence, and a case that can withstand the legal process,” a statement from the department said. “Nick and his family deserve a thorough investigation that leads to meaningful accountability and the strongest possible path to justice.”
