Driver caught with machine guns in Marana

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – On Thursday, May 21, the Arizona DPS seized a large number of weapons and ammunition during a traffic stop on Interstate 10 in Marana.

Detectives pulled over a driver for traffic violations and noticed multiple firearm cases in the vehicle, a Hyundai sedan.

Further searching recovered two machine guns (an M240 and M249), an AK-47, a Barrett .50 caliber rifle, and six Colt 38 Super handguns. Detectives also recovered 5,000 rounds of ammo and multiple gun parts.

Detectives believe the driver was heading to Mexico, possibly to sell the firearms and ammo to cartels.

This is the second large-scale weapons recovery in the Tucson area this year.
