Phoenix Union approves new name for former Cesar Chavez High School

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Phoenix Union High School District passed a measure Thursday, renaming former Cesar Chavez High School.

Officials decided to change the school’s name to Cactus Canyon High School. The new name takes effect for the 2026-2027 school year.

The Laveen school is being renamed following sexual abuse allegations against Chavez, the late civil rights leader.

At a meeting in March, board members approved an informal temporary name, “Champions Circle High School,” allowing the campus to keep the CCHS abbreviation while a permanent name is chosen.

The top three potential new names were Laveen High School, Champion Community High School and, the winner, Cactus Canyon High School.
