SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — A judge ruled a state law that cleared the way for a planned Axon headquarters in north Scottsdale is constitutional, dealing a blow to opponents of the development.

A citizen group sued the state, claiming the law was unconstitutional. The judge now rejected that argument.

The Scottsdale City Council voted on rezoning changes last year that would allow police and military tech company Axon to build a $1.3 billion headquarters near the Loop 101 and Hayden Road.

Opponents fought back against apartments in the plans. They said the headquarters would bring too many people to the area and use up too many resources.

A citizen group collected enough signatures for a ballot measure. Before the vote could happen, lawmakers at the state Capitol passed a new law that cleared the way for the project and canceled the citizen vote.

The citizen group said it will appeal the judge’s new decision. The appeal appears to be the group’s last chance to hold up the development.
