(CNN) – Shredded iceberg lettuce sold at some Taco Bell restaurants was linked to a multistate outbreak of explosive diarrhea caused by a parasite, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

The lettuce was supplied by Taylor Farms.
Nearly 7,000 cases of cyclosporiasis — both confirmed and under investigation — have been reported across the country.
The outbreak linked to the lettuce is thought to be a regional one, centered in the Midwest.

In a statement, Taco Bell says it was removing potentially impacted lettuce in select states.
Taylor Farms did not respond to a request for comment.
Taylor Farms also supplies grocery stores and restaurants across the country, but it’s unclear how many of its products may be affected.

Federal health officials have said multiple investigations are underway.
