Trump addresses election security, calls for SAVE America Act

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump delivered a prime-time address Thursday, claiming China obtained voter information by accessing records in several states and attempted to influence public opinion against him, while outlining what he described as vulnerabilities in the American election system.

Trump announced the immediate declassification and release of intelligence related to election infrastructure during the address.

“Tonight I’m announcing the immediate declassification and release of critical intelligence revealing shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure,” Trump said.

The president also said voting systems in the U.S. could potentially be compromised by actors including Russia and North Korea.

“No country can be great without fair and honest elections,” Trump said.

Trump called on Congress to pass the Save America Act, a federal voter ID bill. He urged Americans to contact their representatives directly.

“To all Americans, I ask you to pick up your phone tomorrow, call your representatives in the House and Senate, and demand that they pass the Save America Act without delay,” Trump said.

The bill has so far failed to gain enough support from lawmakers, including some Republicans. Without elimination of the Senate filibuster, the legislation faces significant obstacles to passage.

Democrats pushed back on the address. House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) questioned Trump’s claims.

“Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election. Something’s really wrong with this guy. I think he actually needs to be checked out,” Jeffries said.

Trump’s critics have accused him of undermining trust in elections following his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. Democrats characterized his claims as conspiracy theories about an election that took place six years ago.
