Just before 4 a.m., first responders were called to a fight at an apartment complex near 38th Street and McDowell Road.

When officers arrived, they found 40-year-old George Fuentes unresponsive inside an apartment, according to the Phoenix Police Department. Fuentes died at the scene.

Investigators said the suspect, Josiah Aries Mahape, ran out a back window but was later found nearby.

Police said Mahape told detectives he and Fuentes had been drinking at Fuentes’ apartment earlier in the day. Mahape later ended up at the airport and told investigators he was unsure how he got there.

Police said Mahape’s rental car was later found at the airport with an open container inside and vomit outside the vehicle.

After midnight, Mahape returned to the apartment complex and went to Fuentes’ apartment, where investigators said he confronted Fuentes about the missing rental car.

The two men got physical before Mahape told investigators he put Fuentes in a chokehold for two to three minutes and did not let go because he feared for the lives of his wife and children.

Court documents say officers later found the keys to Mahape’s vehicle in his pants pocket. Police said Mahape admitted he knew the keys were there but could not explain why he believed Fuentes had taken the car.

Mahape was booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. Bond was set at $1 million.
