The fire broke out shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Monroe Street, near 28th and Van Buren streets. Firefighters arrived to find one house on fire as flames began to spread to another next door.

The call was upgraded to a first-alarm response, and additional crews responded. The response was also due to temperatures topping 100 degrees, so firefighters could be rotated in and out of what’s called the “hot zone.”

After getting the fire under control, crews went inside and saved two dogs. Phoenix Fire officials say both were treated at the scene and were breathing.

No injuries were reported, but a total of seven people from both homes will be displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
