Police were called to respond to a home in Buckhead about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday for a wellness check.
When they arrived, officers found Nateal Campbell dead with several cuts to her neck, police said.
Her son, Calais Campbell’s brother, had barricaded himself inside the home. He was taken into custody.
“This appears to be a domestic incident between a mother and so far, what we believe it’s her son,” Lt. Christopher Butler said Tuesday.
Jail records show Ciarre Campbell is charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm or knife.
The Campbell family confirmed Nateal’s death in a statement shared with Ian Rapoport of ESPN and asked for privacy at this time.
“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”
The Ravens also released a statement offering condolences to the family:
“We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Calais Campbell’s mother,” the team said. “We extend our deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time. We ask that everyone please respect their privacy while they grieve from this heartbreaking loss.”
Calais Campbell returned to Baltimore in the offseason for what will likely be his last season in the NFL.
