Teamsters Local Union No. 104 did not reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement, despite efforts from both sides.

Sun Tran’s latest offer will be presented to the union members on July 11 and 12.

Bus drivers told 13 News they were confused about the results of negotiations, but were told to report to work on Wednesday morning.

Bus riders can expect routes to operate on a normal schedule in the meantime.

On June 7, Sun Tran drivers overwhelmingly approved a strike authorization.

The union’s five-year contract ended at midnight on June 30. Sun Tran has said it will try to maintain services for the community if a strike does happen, but the local union has said it wants to avoid the stoppage as much as possible.

One of the biggest sticking points has been driver and rider safety.

For years, 13 News has reported on the issue of public transit and safety. In fact, the last strike happened in 2015 and lasted for 42 days. One of the big sticking points in the stoppage was indeed driver safety.

Since April 5, 2025, 13 News has reported on at least 19 violent crimes connected to public transit in Tucson. One person has died in the attacks, and several have suffered life-changing injuries. Most of the incidents involved a suspect with a hatchet or a knife.
