Teen accused of killing wheelchair-bound mother with a hammer after getting her phone taken away, police say

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (WCCO) – A 17-year-old girl is in custody after she allegedly killed her mother, who used a wheelchair, with a hammer.

Police in Maplewood, Minnesota, said the woman was found dead in her apartment during a welfare check.

Investigators said the woman had sustained blunt-force trauma to her head.

According to court records, security video showed the teen exiting the apartment building early in the morning carrying a hammer.

Neighbors told police that the two had been arguing the day before, apparently about the mother taking the girl’s phone away.
