The TPD says Ajo Way is shut down while authorities investigate the shooting that happened just before midnight, June 30.
Police say it all started after officers responded to a reported carjacking near East Broadway Boulevard and North Camino Seco about 11:30 p.m.
Officers spoke to the victim, who provided a description of the suspect, the stolen vehicle, and its license plate.
The preliminary investigation determined the suspect was armed with a handgun and the victim was not injured.
A short time later, a TPD officer located the stolen vehicle near South 6th Avenue and West 44th Street on Tucson’s south side.
After the suspect refused to stop and drove off at high speeds, supervisors authorized a vehicle pursuit.
The pursuit continued westbound on Ajo Way to the Interstate 19 overpass, where an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has been activated to handle the criminal investigation of this incident.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) is the lead investigating agency for this officer-involved shooting.
The Tucson Police Department will be conducting a separate investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred.
As is standard practice in all officer-involved shootings, all findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.
