Andre Bell, 20, was shot in the head in January while driving on Interstate 65 in Nashville, Tennessee. Bell, who was a basketball player at Fisk University, was on his way from a university gymnastics event with two of his friends.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said they arrested and charged Brayden Carter, 19, and Damarion Coleman, 18, with first-degree murder after “five months of meticulous investigation.”

The Metro Nashville Police posted videos late Monday night of both men being escorted out of the department headquarters on their way to booking.

According to detectives, the shooting stemmed from Carter’s jealousy and possessiveness over his girlfriend, who is a member of the Fisk University gymnastics team. “Extensive” review and analysis of cell phone data helped lead them to that conclusion, police said in a press release.

“It has been reported that he did not like other young men talking to her,” police said. “Carter and Coleman are alleged to have been at the fairgrounds that January night and followed Bell and his two teammates with the intent of scaring the basketball team to stay away from the girlfriend.”

In addition to the first-degree murder charge, Carter is also charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of using a gun in the commission of a dangerous felony.

Carter was indicted by a grand jury. His bond was set at $250,000.

Coleman was 17 at the time of the shooting and faces his first-degree murder charge in juvenile court.

Bell’s family said that while they are relieved to learn the suspects have been arrested, “it does not erase the pain, shock, and heartbreak our family continues to carry.”

“We are grateful to everyone who has prayed for us, supported us, and stood with us during this devastating time,” the family said. “… As we continue to grieve, we ask for privacy and compassion for us. Our focus remains on honoring Andre’s memory, supporting one another, and seeking closure.”
