Phoenix Police Sgt. Vince Lewis said the man was wanted on sex crimes against a child and the department’s tactical unit tracked him down while he was driving in the area.

As he passed the 23rd Avenue intersection while heading west on Pinnacle Peak Road, Lewis said a K-9 handler in his truck used a grappler to bring the suspect’s SUV to a stop.

“(The handler) was joined by another detective, and that’s when the officer-involved shooting took place,” Lewis said.

The suspect, in his 50s, died at the scene. His name has not been released. Police said no officers were hurt in the shooting.

Lewis did not say whether the wanted felon was armed. “We’re going to talk to the officers to get their recollection of what they observed,” he said.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the shooting.

Pinnacle Peak Road is closed from 23rd Avenue to Interstate 17, so police are asking the public to avoid the area.

This is the 21st officer-involved shooting in the Valley and the 43rd in Arizona in 2026, according to Arizona’s Family records.
