Tammy Dodson died 10 days after the incident, a day before her 59th birthday. She spent those 10 days intubated at a Phoenix burn center with burns covering her body.
Town officials said the incident happened when someone tried to reignite a fire pit.
What happened
Dodson’s sister, Tina Carl, said Dodson and her boyfriend were sitting around a fire pit in their backyard in Prescott Valley. Carl said it was a smaller, elevated metal fire pit.
Carl said that as the fire began to dwindle, Dodson’s boyfriend grabbed a gas can and poured it on the fire to try to reignite it. Carl said this caused an explosion that shot the gas can onto a neighbor’s roof and engulfed Dodson in flames.
Prescott Valley officials confirmed the incident allegedly occurred while someone tried to reignite a fire pit. They said a man on the property had injuries as well, but was not transported.
Their investigation is ongoing.
According to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s office, Dodson’s death was ruled accidental, due to “complications of thermal injuries,” although the report is not complete.

Family reacts
“I don’t want anybody ever to throw gasoline or igniting sources onto fires,” Carl said. “That’s just beyond my comprehension; it’s just beyond it.”
“I’m very angry; she should not have been taken from us the way she was,” Carl said.
Dodson was a mother, grandmother and a beloved health care worker. She leaves behind two children and three young grandchildren, who she adored.
Her family said they are traumatized by what happened. They set up a GoFundMe to help cover memorial costs.
