PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The City of Phoenix has officially decided on a new name to replace the day that formerly honored late labor rights activist César Chávez.

Mayor Kate Gallego and the Phoenix City Council voted Wednesday to permanently adopt Farmworkers Day as the name of the city holiday.
The city’s decision comes months after sexual abuse allegations involving young girls and women surfaced against Chávez.
Chávez’s co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association, Dolores Huerta, publicly said she was a victim of Chávez.
“While César Chávez was a well-known leader in the fight for labor rights, the movement belonged to so many other individuals who were leaders in their own right,” Mayor Gallego said. “We will recognize and honor their collective struggles, sacrifices, and successes on Farmworkers Day.”
Phoenix temporarily used the new name for the holiday earlier this year, but Wednesday’s vote makes Farmworkers Day official.
“This day belongs to the workers. It belongs to their families. It belongs to everyone who has stood together and said that hard work deserves dignity, respect, and a fair shot,” Councilwoman Betty Guardado said.

The City is also renaming streets, municipal buildings and parks that use Chávez’s name.
Last month, Phoenix approved Águila Park and Águila Community Center as the new names for the former César Chávez Park and Community Center in Laveen.
In May, Phoenix Union High School District renamed what was César Chávez High School in Laveen to Cactus Canyon High School.
