EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE/Gray News) – An Indiana mother is facing charges after witnesses allege she “passed out drunk” before her 3-year-old son drowned in a backyard pool.

Amie Jo Farber, 41, is charged with neglect resulting in death after her 3-year-old son drowned in a pool Saturday.
Evansville Police say a frantic 911 call was made around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, reporting a 3-year-old boy had drowned in a backyard pool. Emergency crews arrived at the home and attempted lifesaving measures on the boy. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say the homeowner told them Farber and her son showed up around 2:30 p.m. and asked if they could swim in the pool. The homeowner said they could but told Farber she needed to be sure to watch the 3-year-old.
Farber was reportedly sitting outside at a patio table while her son was in a pool float.
The homeowner told police they came outside to find Farber “passed out” in the patio chair and the 3-year-old floating face down in the water. While one witness pulled the victim out and began doing CPR, another called 911.
During the 911 call, officers say one witness could be heard yelling “Amie” repeatedly in an attempt to get Farber to wake up and that another woman could be heard on the call saying, “She’s passed out drunk!”

The homeowner later told officers that in the two hours Farber was in the backyard, she drank about five 25-ounce beers.
When the first officer arrived on scene, they say they saw Farber next to some trash cans apparently throwing away empty beer cans. On the ground next to her were several empty cans, and she showed signs of impairment.
At the hospital, police say Farber told officers she “must have fallen asleep” but didn’t know for how long. Officers say Farber also told them, “This is all my fault” but didn’t elaborate further.
Police got a search warrant for Farber’s blood to get it tested for drugs and alcohol.
Farber was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on Saturday night. She is being held on a $25,000 cash bond and has an initial court hearing set for Wednesday.
In a separate case in 2023, Farber was arrested and charged with neglect when police say a family member called 911 after finding her intoxicated while caring for her baby. It’s unclear if the same child was involved in both incidents.
