PHOENIX (AZFamily) — U.S. teens are falling behind in reading and math, according to results from a global assessment released this week.

Roughly every three years, about 90 countries take part in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which looks at how 15-year-olds around the world perform in reading, math and science. Results from last year’s assessment were released this week.
US scores decline
Several countries outperformed the United States. Australia performed better than the U.S. in all three subjects: math, reading and science. Japan also performed better than the U.S. in every subject area.
Canada scored higher in two categories and tied the U.S. in reading. The United Kingdom also performed better than the U.S.
U.S. scores fell in reading and math. Reading saw the largest decline, dropping 14 points. Math scores dropped two points, while science scores rose three points.
About 760,000 students from roughly 90 countries took the assessment.
AI use linked to scores
Results indicate students who said they did not use artificial intelligence on their writing assignments outperformed students who said they did use it.

The report states that the steep decline in reading shows how AI has affected skills such as evaluating information and thinking critically.
Instances of what the report calls “hasty reading,” defined as reading quickly but inaccurately, have nearly doubled since 2018.
Parents have an effect on their students’ performance. Results show that parent interest in their children’s schooling is linked to higher performance, and reading daily is key.
