SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — For the second straight week, Saguaro High School’s varsity football team won’t take the field against a rival — a highly unusual situation for one of Arizona’s most decorated and historic high school football powerhouses.

Scottsdale Unified School District officials said this week’s matchup against Saguaro High School and American Leadership Academy-Queen Creek is canceled. The Sabercats were set to travel to Queen Creek to face the Patriots on Thursday evening.
District officials said Saguaro’s varsity team is still dealing with a “significant number of injuries.”
“As a result, there are not enough healthy and available student-athletes to safely field a team for this week’s competition,” a portion of the district’s statement said.
Athletic Director David Abrams announced the cancellation in a letter sent to the Saguaro community Tuesday morning. District staff canceled the game after consulting with athletic training staff and school administration, citing an increased risk of injury and concerns for student safety.
“We understand this news is disappointing for our student-athletes, coaches, families, students, and supporters. Our athletes and coaches dedicate a tremendous amount of time and effort to preparing for each competition, and canceling a game is never a decision that is made lightly,” the statement read.
Roster numbers plunge after opening week defeat
Saguaro has only played one game so far this season, with a blowout 62-0 loss to Desert Mountain on Aug. 28. The Sabercats’ historic rivalry game against Chaparral was canceled the following week. That game has traditionally been one of the biggest matchups on the Arizona high school sports calendar.
The Sabercats’ varsity roster lists just 25 players. According to school officials, a significant portion of those players suffered injuries during the loss to Desert Mountain.
The low turnout and high injury rates represent a steep decline for a program accustomed to sustained championship success. Saguaro has undergone significant leadership turnover in the past calendar year, replacing its principal, athletic director and head football coach.

Former coach points to ‘internal battles’ and transfer exodus
Saguaro Head Coach Butch Goncharoff was unavailable for comment on Tuesday. However, former head coach Darius Kelly, who coached the team in 2025 and now coaches in Oklahoma, shared his perspective on the program’s steep decline.
“Looking from the outside in, we should have won some games,” Kelly said. “We shouldn’t have even been in those games because of the numbers we have and the battles we were fighting internally—administration, district and even the AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association) in processes there.”
Kelly estimated that the Saguaro program has lost roughly 30 players to transfers over the past two years. He acknowledged that pressure on leadership was heavy.
“There’s some things I could have done better … a lot of the issues came from winning and losing, not necessarily what happened on the football field,” Kelly said.
Looking ahead
The district stressed that despite the back-to-back cancelations, it does not mean the entire season is canceled. Instead, student-athletes will continue recovering in order to finish the season “strong, healthy, and ready to compete,” officials said.
Earlier this month, Saguaro said it could not field a freshman or junior varsity team this year because it only had 35 players in total.
The Sabercats are set to host Mountain Ridge on Sept. 18.
