MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — One of Arizona’s most stunning natural phenomena is returning — and you’ll want to snag the best seat in the house to experience it one more time this year.

From Sept. 13-19, visitors and residents can see the iconic “Cougar Shadow” sprawl across the Superstition Mountains. The majestic creature forms when the setting sun creates a silhouette of a crouching cougar across the mountain’s western face, according to Zoey Knoebel with VisitMesa.
The gorgeous sight is only visible for one week each fall and spring.
Prime time viewing to see the cougar is around 6-6:30 p.m., as it begins to take shape 30 minutes before sunset. Don’t be late — the cougar is only visible for 20-30 minutes, depending on the weather.
One of the best viewpoints to see the cougar is near Superstition Boulevard and Goldfield Road in Apache Junction. From this point, spectators may get a glimpse of the shadow slowly forming across the mountainside.

The phenomenon attracts hundreds of locals and visitors each year. However, if you miss out on the fall window, you won’t be able to see it until spring 2027.
