On Thursday, May 21, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said that Victor Huerta Jr. was indicted on five felony counts of fraud, forgery, money laundering, and theft.
According to the indictment, Huerta was working for the Santa Cruz County Attorney’s Office at the time of the allegations.
Prosecutors said he would take cash out of the evidence vault or edit the checks meant for others. From May 2018 to February 2025, he allegedly pocketed nearly $200,000.
The news comes less than a year after another former county employee was convicted of stealing millions.
In June 2025, former Santa Cruz County Treasurer Elizabeth Gutfahr was sentenced to a decade in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges of embezzlement, money laundering, and tax evasion.

Gutfahr admitted to making 187 fraudulent wire transfers to fake companies to steal $38.7 million over 10 years.
She stole the money from school and fire districts, as well as the county itself. She bought 26 vehicles, homes in Pinetop and Mexico, a cattle ranch, and a horse ranch.
She will be on supervised release for three years after serving her sentence.
