SACATON, AZ (AZFamily) — A suspect has been arrested after a shooting on the Gila River Indian Reservation led to an hours-long shelter-in-place for nearby schools in Queen Creek.

Around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Gila River police officers responded to reports of a shooting at a home along Hunt Highway just west of Power Road. Officers found one person who had been shot, who was rushed to a hospital.
Police say the suspect was gone before officers arrived, leading to a search of the immediate area.
“As a precaution, nearby Chandler schools have been placed on shelter-in-place status,” GRPD said in a news release. “These measures were taken out of caution to ensure the safety of students and staff while law enforcement continues to search the surrounding area.”
A notice was sent to Casteel High School staff, parents and students that the campus was advised to shelter in place, stressing that it is not a lockdown. Another notice sent from Chandler Unified School District said authorities were chasing a suspect in the area, but no other details were released.
Police say a suspect was arrested early Tuesday afternoon.
All students and staff are safe. The shelter-in-place was lifted shortly after 1 p.m.

Video from Arizona’s Family news chopper shows numerous marked and unmarked Gila River police vehicles surrounding a neighborhood on the reservation. Several investigators were seen taking photos of items outside of one home. A crisis response tent was also set up in the area.
Gila River police say the department was working closely with Queen Creek police and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
“We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as law enforcement continues its response and investigation,” GRPD said.
