PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona congressional Democrats are pressing the Department of Homeland Security for more information about a measles outbreak at an immigration detention center in Pinal County.

Last Tuesday, DHS reported seven active measles cases among detainees at the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Florence, southeast of Phoenix. Pinal County earlier this year reported three measles cases involving detainees in federal custody.

“Two outbreaks in less than six months make it clear that more needs to be done to prevent future outbreaks,” the Democratic lawmakers wrote in a letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and acting ICE director David Venturella.

The lawmakers, led by Democratic Rep. Greg Stanton, requested that DHS brief their staff on the outbreak by Monday, July 20.

Last week, DHS said ICE’s medical team “immediately took steps to quarantine and control further spread and infection” and was providing “proper medical care.” It also suspended all non-legal, in-person visitation to the detention facility.

Arizona’s Family reached out to ICE for updates on the measles outbreak.

The group of lawmakers, including Sens. Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego and Rep. Adelita Grijalva, said the latest outbreak “raises serious questions about the adequacy of ICE’s infection prevention and containment measures.”

They asked for details about DHS and ICE’s response to the outbreak and their plans to prevent a future outbreak, along with their infectious disease protocols at the Florence facility, including where infected individuals are housed.

They’re demanding an updated number of confirmed measles cases at the immigration center, along with a timeline of when symptoms began and when detainees were tested.

The lawmakers also asked whether any of the detainees missed immigration court hearings, attorney meetings, or other legal proceedings due to being quarantined or isolated.
