LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A man arrested last month in connection with the death of his wife in Utah nearly two decades ago left a will and a letter in his jail cell before he died, according to a newly released report.

David Vander Meer, 49, was arrested June 22 in connection with the 20-year-old death of his wife, Bernadette, at Zion National Park.
Police later said Vander Meer was taken to UMC to be treated for self-inflicted injuries and was pronounced dead June 25.

According to the report, Vander Meer was found unresponsive in his cell, where he was the only one inside.
Investigators said evidence at the scene indicated there was no evidence of a physical altercation.

Officials also noted a handwritten will and a handwritten suicide note, the report states.

Vander Meer had been charged with murder and insurance fraud in connection with Bernadette’s death at Angels Landing on Aug. 22, 2006.
The Washington County Attorney’s Office Investigations Bureau said the case was reopened after investigators received a tip, leading to Vander Meer’s arrest.
