Staying healthy during summer travel season

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – As summer travel picks up, health experts say preparation before leaving home is one of the most effective ways to stay healthy on the road or in the air.

“The most important thing to do while traveling is hand hygiene, and making sure you have hand sanitizer,” said Nicole Henry, a CVS district leader.

Experts recommend checking your medicine cabinet at least a week before departure. Travelers should ask their pharmacist for an extra supply of any prescriptions to avoid running out while away.

When building a travel health kit, experts say to go beyond bandages and include a pain reliever, anti-nausea medication, and allergy relief. All medications should be kept in a carry-on bag rather than checked luggage for easy access in an emergency.

For those driving through Arizona, Henry said temperature control for medications is a concern.

“Make sure we try to keep our medications at room temperature or in a cool space because they may become less effective over time,” Henry said.

Travelers who forget a medication can turn to major pharmacy chains, which can often process refills in another state. Anyone who feels ill after returning from a trip is advised to see a doctor.
