Fallen firefighter flown back to Arizona following deadly Colorado wildfire

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Families, friends and fellow first responders gathered together to honor an Arizona firefighter who was among three people killed in a fire shelter tragedy in Colorado.

Nick Hutcherson, 27, of Glendale, and two other firefighters died while trying to shield themselves from flames by deploying tent-like shelters when they were overcome. The other two firefighters were identified as Emily Barker, 38, of Michigan, and Sydney Watson, 26, of Alabama.

A procession for Hutcherson began at Deer Valley Airport and traveled through Phoenix, ending at Hansen Mortuary Chapel near 7th Street and Northern Avenue.

Hutcherson was assigned to the U.S. Forest Service Kaibab National Forest. A verified GoFundMe has been set up to help his family.

Hutcherson, Barker and Watson were part of a crew that goes into remote areas to quickly put out new and rapidly escalating wildfires, federal officials said.

The crews were assigned near the Colorado-Utah border, where the Snyder Fire merged with the Jones fire and overtook the Knowles and Gore fires. The blaze has burned over 28,000 acres.

Wildfires have erupted all across the West, fueled by months of dry weather and a record lack of snow this past winter in some places. Wildfire experts have been warning for months that extreme fire dangers are likely this summer.
