An extreme heat warning has been issued for Tuesday and Wednesday.

At Reid Park, playground equipment sat empty as temperatures reached 104 degrees. Health experts say the equipment is too hot for children to play on during peak heat hours, and the risk for heat exhaustion and sunburn for young kids is high.

When people spend too much time outdoors in extreme heat, they can experience heat exhaustion with symptoms like dizziness, heavy sweating, a rapid and weak pulse, and a pale, clammy body. In extreme cases, heat stroke can occur with symptoms like a loss of consciousness, a rapid strong pulse, no sweating, and a body temperature of over 100 degrees.

Experts recommend staying inside during hot days. Those who do go outside should drink plenty of water, wear clothes that cover the body and apply sunscreen to prevent sunburns, make use of shaded areas, and go inside to cool down if experiencing any heat illness symptoms.

Nate Young with the Pima County Health Department’s Office of Heat Response and Relief said this is especially important for vulnerable groups like homeless individuals, elderly people, those living in mobile homes, and young children.

“Kids can just be a little more susceptible to heat and may not be able to adapt as well as a young adult who maybe is working outside or is just more acclimated to the heat,” Young said. “They don’t always have as good of an understanding or perception of what is going on with their body and not always being able to recognize those warning symptoms. And so really talking with them about what that may feel like when they’re getting too hot.”
