A massive American Flag was raised on the historic dam at the Arizona-Nevada border in late May to celebrate Memorial Day and America 250 with plans to remain for Fourth of July celebrations.

But a post on the Hoover Dam’s Facebook page Tuesday announced that the flag has been removed after it was damaged with an “unexpected tear.”

Details are not available about how the flag was torn. On June 3, the flag was lowered on the face of the dam due to high winds.

There is no estimated completion date for repairs, and it’s unknown when the flag will return to the Hoover Dam.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs joined several local, state and national leaders in May to unveil the flag.

“Built during the depths of the great depression, this reclamation dam and many others put thousands to work, powered the growth of the southwest and became a symbol of resilience that still inspires us today,” said Genevieve Johnson, Department of Reclamation Regional Director.

A patriotic lighting display on the Hoover Dam walls will continue each night through July 4, officials said. The top-of-dam and Memorial Bridge walkways will stay open until 10 p.m. every night to better accommodate an increase in visitors.
