Woman convicted of ESA theft in Pima County

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – A woman has been convicted of stealing Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account funds.

The Attorney General Kris Mayes said Amanda Elizabeth Maestas had been collecting ESA funds after she and her child had left Arizona.

Arizona residency is a requirement of the program

On May 15, Maestas pleaded guilty to theft and will serve a term of supervised probation and must pay $28,433.19 in restitution to the ESA program.

“Protecting taxpayer dollars is a top priority for my office,” said Attorney General Mayes. “Those who defraud the ESA program and steal from taxpayers will be held accountable.”

Maestas will be sentenced on June 26 in Pima County Superior Court.
