PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona’s top prosecutor is suing a makeup and personal care giant, accusing it of selling and marketing chemical hair relaxers linked to cancer without warning customers.

Attorney General Kris Mayes announced Friday that her office filed a consumer fraud lawsuit against L’Oréal and its parent company, Softsheen.
The lawsuit claims the companies sold chemical hair relaxers without disclosing that the products possibly contained cancer-causing chemicals, including ones linked to ovarian and uterine cancer.
Mayes says the products were primarily marketed to Black women and some to children.
Chemical hair relaxers are highly alkaline products that straighten hair by breaking down its natural bonds. But these products can contain harmful chemicals, some of which are classified as known or probable carcinogens when used on the scalp as intended. Carcinogens are any substances that could increase cancer risk.
Mayes cited some studies that show women who use the toxic chemical hair relaxers have a higher risk of developing uterine and ovarian cancer, or even other hormonal cancers like thyroid and pancreatic.

“L’Oréal knew or should have known about the dangers associated with these toxic hair straightening products,” Mayes said in a statement. “Yet, instead of warning their consumers, they put profits over the safety of women and children. That is unacceptable and we will hold them accountable for it.”
