TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – A student at Sunnyside High School has been arrested after school officials say that individual was found with a weapon on campus today, September 10.

The Tucson Police Department says school staff learned about the student possibly possessing a firearm on campus and brought the student into the office.
Staff alerted a TPD officer who was working security at the school.
The student was found with a handgun and ammunition and now faces charges of being a minor in possession of a firearm, aggravated assault against a school employee, and possession of a weapon on school grounds.
The student was transported to the Pima County Juvenile Detention Center.
Here is a copy of the letter sent to families by Sunnyside Principal Stephanie Ponce:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am writing to inform you about an incident that occurred at our school today. This morning, we brought a student to the office for a disciplinary matter, and in that investigation, we discovered that the student was in possession of a weapon. I want to emphasize that there was no immediate threat to the safety of our students or staff.
As soon as the situation was discovered, our staff took swift and appropriate action, law enforcement was immediately contacted and the individual was detained. I want to thank the staff involved for making the safety of our students a priority. No lockdown was initiated because this was an isolated incident that was quickly handled by staff and law enforcement.
I want to reassure you that we took every measure to secure our campus and ensure the well-being of everyone involved. I understand that this news may be alarming. We are fully committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all students and all the necessary steps are being taken to prevent similar situations in the future.
Parents, I urge you to have a conversation with your children about the serious consequences of bringing any type of weapon to school. If you or your child have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

This is the third confirmed incident involving an armed student in just over two weeks.
On Aug. 25, an Alice Vail Middle student was arrested for allegedly bringing a gun to campus. The TPD said the student was arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm on school grounds and brought to the juvenile detention center.
On Aug. 26, a Marana High student was arrested after allegedly bringing a machete to school. The Marana Unified School District said the school’s security system detected the machete and the student told security about the weapon and said they simply forgot it was in their backpack. The district also said the student never actually made it onto campus. There was also a mental health crisis on campus around the same time, and the district said the two incidents were not related.
