PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Over a dozen Arizona charter and public high schools just landed among the nation’s best, according to a new national report released Tuesday.

U.S. News released its 2026-2027 Best High School rankings, compiling data from over 27,000 high schools nationwide.
Of nearly 18,000 schools included, the report calculated the rankings based on six indicators: college readiness, college curriculum breadth index (CCBI), state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance and graduation rate.
Coming in as the top high school in Arizona and No. 15 overall in the nation was BASIS Oro Valley, part of the K-12 public BASIS Charter Schools network. The school finished with a 99.92 report card, with students scoring a perfect 100% in reading and science proficiency.
University High School finished as the top Tucson-area public high school, ranked No. 6 among Arizona schools and No. 50 nationwide. Of nearly 1,000 students, the school finished with a 98% graduation rate and scored an overall 99.72 on its report card.

The top Phoenix-area public high school was Gilbert Classical Academy, coming in at No. 13 in Arizona rankings and No. 79 nationally. With a 99% graduation rate, students are required to earn subject credits, do a senior thesis project and complete at least 80 hours of community service. The school finished with a 99.56 report card, with 100% of students passing at least one AP exam.
