MARANA, Ariz. (13 News) – Marana High resumed classes and campus activities Wednesday, one day after a student was found dead in the school library.

From the outside, the campus looked like it was operating on a normal school day, aside from a couple of police cars parked out front. Parents and community members said the past 24 hours have been difficult to process.
Daniel Matthews, a Marana High parent, said the death is something he didn’t expect to have to address with his freshman son.

“It’s a tragic thing. I mean, clearly the student body’s affected,” Matthews said.
Matthews said the situation made for difficult conversations, but that students have responded the best they can.
“It really gives you pause. It makes the students stop and think. And I, I saw an outpouring of concern from students and a banding together of sorts,” Matthews said.
Jim Luckow, a former Marana Unified School District employee, said giving students space to process what happened is a challenge for administration and staff.
“We always try to wanna prepare for life’s challenges, life’s circumstances, and when they hit us unexpectedly, which they usually do, we try to take those moments and teach them through those moments,” Luckow said.
The school had its crisis response team on campus Wednesday. The team will also be there in the days ahead.
On social media, comments debated whether returning to school so soon was the right decision. Luckow said that question can be complicated.

“There’s probably three or four good right answers … and probably three or four wrong answers,” Luckow said. “I think we just have to make what we think is the best decision for the moment, and live through that.”
In addition to classes starting Wednesday, activities such as sporting events returned to campus after some were canceled or moved to other locations Tuesday.
That included a cross-country meet, which Matthews’ son competed in.
“As little and sort of insignificant as they may seem, they are a very unifying function for the student body, and it’s a great way to get back on our feet and keep moving forward,” Matthews said.
Luckow said that while it’s good for the students to feel a sense of normalcy, the feelings of those directly impacted should not be ignored.
“It’ll come up. You know, it’s gonna come up in conversation around the dinner table, and those are the teachable moments that grandparents and parents and teachers and others, uh, can capitalize on,” Luckow said.
The school district and Marana Police Department have not confirmed what happened.
13 News asked if a security alarm was tripped during the break-in, and the district said that it is under investigation.
