MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC/Gray News) – A 27-year-old man is facing attempted murder charges after police in Tennessee said he beat his mother with a baseball bat because she wouldn’t fix him a meal.

DeAngelo Billingsley is being held at the Shelby County Jail on $52,000 bond. He is charged with attempted second-degree murder and domestic assault.
The investigation began Saturday with a call for help from a home on Bonita Avenue in Whitehaven.
Memphis police met with the homeowner, a woman who suffered a critical laceration to her forehead. She was able to give a statement to police at the scene, but later was unable to speak with investigators at the hospital.
She told first responders that she and her son, Billingsley, got into an argument that quickly escalated “regarding her not cooking him any food.”
She told Memphis police that he came into her bedroom and charged at her with a metal baseball bat. After a brief struggle, Billingsley allegedly overpowered his mother and struck her in the head with the bat.

According to the arrest affidavit, Billingsley’s mother suffered critical injuries from the blow to her forehead and had to be rushed to the hospital for lifesaving treatment.
Billingsley was detained on the scene and brought to a police station, where he reportedly confessed and gave a statement to investigators that matched his mother’s narrative.
At the hospital, Billingsley’s mother was unable to speak but was able to identify her son as the person responsible for her injuries in a photo that investigators showed her.
Billingsley was issued a $50,000 bond in this case. He was issued an additional $2,000 bond for violating his bail conditions in a 2024 case also involving his mother, where he allegedly shattered the windshield of her car after she kicked him out of her house.
Court records indicate Billingsley was living with his mother at the time of this latest arrest.
