NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT/Gray News) — A husband and wife have been found dead inside a North Carolina home early Thursday morning after an automated smartwatch emergency call was made to authorities.

According to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home on Rowsgate Lane after emergency medical services requested law enforcement assistance.
Inside, deputies discovered the bodies of the couple, both dead from gunshot wounds.
The husband and wife were identified as Stephen Larnell Willetts and Tracey Parker Willetts.

Investigators said they believe the smartwatch automatically dialed 911, potentially because it sensed a hard fall or a lack of heartbeat from one of the victims.
When EMS arrived, there was no response at the door, so they contacted the sheriff’s department. Deputies said they found the garage door open upon arrival before entering the home and finding the couple.
Authorities said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident, but their investigation remains ongoing.
