PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Phoenix Police Department has opened a criminal investigation into two of its officers after reports that they used force during a traffic stop without reporting the incident.

The department said it was made aware of the accusations last week.
Officials said preliminary information shows the officers used force during a traffic stop and did not turn on their body-worn cameras or report the incident, which is required by policy.
“Although details remain limited at this early stage, we recognize the seriousness of any allegation involving potential criminal behavior by our personnel,” the department said in a statement. “Both officers were immediately placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.”
The special investigations unit is handling the criminal investigation. “Once the criminal investigation is completed, the Professional Standards Bureau will initiate an administrative investigation,” the statement said. “These processes are intended to ensure a thorough, impartial and comprehensive review of the incident.”

The department did not say when or where the traffic stop occurred or name the officers. Information will be shared throughout the investigation, officials said.
