Rogério Renato Mateucci, rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, was struck by roofing material dislodged by strong winds, according to the Scottsdale Fire Department. For universities outside the United States, the rector is often the most senior official.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. near Cactus Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, while Mateucci was with a group on a walking tour at the late architect’s home.

Fire crews said Mateucci, only identified as a Brazilian tourist by fire crews, died instantly and was pronounced dead at the scene. No foul play is suspected, and police are investigating the death as a weather-related accident.

The National Weather Service reported east winds of 22 mph in Scottsdale around 2 p.m. Friday, with gusts up to 32 mph. It was also a First Alert Weather Day.

Taliesin West is closed to the public until further notice.

“The Foundation extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual,” the foundation’s CEO Joe Spector said in a statement provided to Arizona’s Family, adding that “no further details will be shared out of respect for privacy and to allow officials to complete their work.”

The historic home, built in 1937, served as Wright’s winter home and desert laboratory in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains. It is now a National Historic Landmark and home to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.
