Marana Police says man and woman died from murder-suicide

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The Marana Police Department said the deaths of a man and a woman on Monday, May 25, were the result of a murder-suicide.

Their two children were not hurt.

Around 5 p.m., officers were called to a home in the 6700 block of West Alegria Drive, which is near Silverbell and Cortaro, for a shooting. The MPD said 36-year-old Mikaela Durfey was found shot to death in the driveway of the home.

Durfey’s ex-husband, 37-year-old Brian Schnurr, was quickly identified as a suspect. Officers then started looking for his vehicle, a blue Dodge Challenger.

The vehicle was found in the parking lot of a popular steakhouse in the 8500 block of North Silverbell Road, less than a mile from the family’s home.

13 News’ Dan Marries was there when Schnurr’s vehicle was surrounded by armed officers. He saw two MPD vehicles box in the suspect vehicle and watched as officers pulled the couple’s two young children from the vehicle unharmed.

Dan then saw two armed officers running into the desert area near the parking lot, where Schnurr was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to court records, Durfey filed for divorce from Schnurr in July 2025.

Durfey was a licensed counselor, while Schnurr was a chiropractor in Tucson.

Anyone with information is asked to call the MPD at 520-382-2000.

It has been a violent week in southern Arizona. Since May 20, at least seven people and one dog have died in separate shootings across the area.

  • On May 20, a woman and a dog were killed, and a man was injured, in a double shooting near East Wilcox Drive and South 7th Street in Sierra Vista. The SVPD said 43-year-old Calisha Schafer, of Sierra Vista, was found dead on the floor of the apartment. The man was shot in the hand and was taken to the hospital.
  • On May 22, two men died in a road-rage shooting near Speedway and Harrison in Tucson.The Tucson Police Department said 41-year-old Dustin Sean Sowards and 21-year-old Jacob Michael Leland got into a confrontation while driving and shot and killed each other.
  • On May 24, a man was found shot to death near Mission and Ajo in Tucson. The TPD said 39-year-old Tyler Slife died and no suspects have been found.
  • On May 24, one person was injured in a shooting in the 2300 block of Cherry Hills Drive in Sierra Vista.The SVPD said 18-year-old Angel Valenzuela is wanted in connection with the incident that happened during a gun sale. A home was also hit by gunfire.
  • On May 25, a suspect was shot and killed by an Arizona DPS trooper on Interstate 10 near Benson. DPS said it started as a traffic stop, and no one else was injured.
  • On May 25, a man was shot multiple times at a home on North 12th Street in Tombstone. The Tombstone Marshal’s Office said the victim was taken to a Tucson hospital and a suspect was taken into custody.
