Investigators say just before 9 a.m., a sedan driver ran a red light near State Route 24 and Signal Butte Road and crashed into a large passenger van. The impact caused the van to roll over and land upside down.

Police said 10 people were inside the van, killing one person and sending seven others to the hospital. The victim was later identified as 51-year-old Evon Zubah.

The sedan driver was also hospitalized. Police said all eight people hospitalized have minor injuries and are expected to survive.

Impairment does not appear to be a factor, Mesa police said. However, it’s unclear if the sedan driver will face charges in connection to the crash.

“Our thoughts are with Evon’s family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragic incident,” the department said.
