PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Police are asking for your help after a deadly hit and run Tuesday night in midtown Phoenix.

DeWayne Lewis, 57, died after he was hit while crossing the street near 5th Avenue and Indian School Road.
Police said the driver never stopped. Detectives did not specify if Lewis was in a crosswalk or not.
Arizona’s Family spoke with a witness who may be the key to finding the driver authorities are looking for.
Police are searching for a white SUV. They haven’t released any more details yet about who was behind the wheel; however, a witness said the driver was going fast eastbound on 5th Avenue.
He saw the crash and went over to help Lewis.
“I heard a boom. She [the driver] hit him and just kept on going,” the witness said. “Her front bumper was missing, so if they’re looking for clues, she’s missing a front bumper.”
This witness did not want to be identified but said he can still hear the sound of the impact.
“The driver kept going. She ran the red light,” he said. “I went over to check on him, and other people were already giving him chest compressions, and I called police, and it was just an unfortunate event. She just ran.”

Investigators said all they know right now is they’re looking for a white SUV. The witness gave Arizona’s Family the same description he says he gave to officers.
“It was a white lady. She had her windows down, so I could see that much,” he said. “I can’t give you a full description, but it was a white lady in a white SUV.”
The witness said he lives nearby and walks the street daily.
He sees Lewis just about every day, and that Lewis frequents the QuikTrip on that corner.
“I think he was a homeless individual,” he said. “He had the same backpack and shoes on him. Just take your time. There are civilians walking. Just slow down.”
There are cameras on the intersection’s traffic lights, but police are asking anyone else with information to come forward.
