Mother charged with murder was in psychotic state at time of son’s strangling, attorney says

JOLIET, Ill. (WBBM) – An Illinois woman accused of killing her 2-year-old son will remain in jail following a court appearance Tuesday.

Corie Walsh is facing three counts of first-degree murder in the strangling death of Barrett Walsh last week.

Following Tuesday’s hearing, the defense attorney said Walsh was in a psychotic state at the time.

“We’re disappointed with the ruling, but we are going to continue to work really hard to investigate this case and present the defense as correct, which is that she was psychotic and this is not a first-degree murder,” defense attorney Andrea Lyon said.

Witnesses told police that Walsh had recently become very invested in the Clancy murder trial.

Lyon on Tuesday accused investigators of overplaying any potential connection to the Clancy case, calling it careless and insensitive.

“That speculation that this has anything to do that, it’s a copycat or anything like that is baseless and cruel,” Lyon said.
