PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Dozens of adults at United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona hit the basketball court for an inclusive and adaptive clinic, marking the final session of the program’s inaugural season.

The clinic at the north Phoenix campus is made possible through a partnership with the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation. About 40 people participated in the program, learning to dribble and pass the ball. Go the Gorilla also made a grand appearance at the event.

The program ran for seven sessions throughout the season at ArizonAbility Adult Day program, part of UCP of Central Arizona. More than 40 adult day members participated in rotation, building skills with coaches from Ability360.

“Our partnership with the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury Foundation is absolutely top notch,” said Camille Ridley, vice president of marketing and developing with UCP. “We are so pleased to have their support and their partnership in this very important first time program.”

The sessions will resume in the fall with another seven-session series. A community clinic is planned for early fall at Ability360.

Participants have shown enthusiasm for the program each week, whether on the court or cheering from the audience. The clinic builds confidence and motor skills for adults with disabilities.

“Accessibility, it has a long way to go,” Ridley said. “We talk about it, but we’re actually doing it.”
